CDL owner operator truck drivers must obtain and renew their medical certification every 2 years. If the medical examiner identifies certain health conditions that need closer monitoring, they may issue a certificate that is valid for a shorter period. At Roadrunner, we run safe, we run smart, and we run together. Here’s how you can renew or get your medical certification:
1. Schedule a Physical Exam: Make an appointment with a certified medical examiner listed in the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
2. Prepare for the Exam: Bring any necessary medical records, particularly if you have existing health conditions, and a valid ID.
3. Undergo the Physical Exam: The exam will assess various aspects of your health, including:
a. Vision and hearing
b. Blood pressure
c. Heart and lung function
d. Overall physical fitness and mobility
e. Medical history
f. Medication review
4. Obtain the Medical Examiner's Certificate: If you pass the exam, the examiner will issue a Medical Examiner's Certificate (also known as a DOT medical card). This certificate is typically valid for 24 months, but it can be issued for a shorter period if the examiner has concerns about a specific medical condition.
5. Submit the Certificate to Your State's Licensing Agency: Depending on your state, you may need to submit a copy of your medical certificate to the state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent agency. Some states allow online submission, while others may require you to mail it in or submit it in person.
6. Carry the Certificate: You must carry your valid medical certificate with you when driving a commercial vehicle, as you may be required to show it during inspections.
If you fail the exam due to a disqualifying medical condition, you'll need to address the issue before you can be certified. Some conditions may require a waiver or exemption from the FMCSA. With Roadrunner linehaul planners, coordinators, and support staff, we’re here to support you along the way as you build your business. Orange & Black Has Your Back! Apply today.
