Filing for a Tax Extension

Post Date - Apr 10, 2025

As an owner operator and independent contractor, your taxes involve more than they would for a company driver. Running your own business is a lot of work, and we know that people get busy. If you haven’t submitted your taxes yet, make sure to apply for an extension before the deadline of April 15th.

How to File for an Extension:

·         Get Form 4868 — Download from IRS.gov or use tax software

·         Fill in basic info — Name, address, and SSN (and spouse’s if filing jointly)

·         Line 4 — Estimate total tax liability for the year (your total expected tax owed)

·         Line 5 — Add up your total payments so far (estimated tax payments, withholdings, etc.)

·         Line 6 — Subtract Line 5 from Line 4 to get what you still owe

·         Line 7 — Enter how much you’re paying now (this is optional, but recommended to avoid penalties)

·         Line 8 — Only check if you live outside the U.S. and qualify for an automatic 2-month extension

·         Submit it:

o   E-file using tax software or a tax professional

o   Mail to the IRS using the address listed on Form 4868 under instructions for your state

o   Deadline — Must be filed by April 15, 2025
